Changing a computer drive can be a challenge, especially if you don't know much about computers. There are many reasons why people may feel the need to change disks. Some reasons include: upgrading the drive size, replacing a bad hard drive, and even moving from the hard drive (Hard disk) to SSD (Solid State Drive). Whether you're using an old PC or a new PC, upgrading from a hard drive to an SSD will improve your computer's speed and overall performance.
In this article, we will show you a step-by-step procedure on how to replace a hard drive (Hard disk) to SSD (Solid State Drive).
What do we need to look out for before migrating from HDD to SSD?
There are things to consider before changing your device:
- Make sure you know the dimensions of your previous hard drive.
- Also, make sure you know the maximum drive size limit your computer can support.

Step-by-step procedure on how to change hard drive to SSD
1. Backup your files. The first step is to back up your files. If you don't plan on losing your data, you need to back up your files. You can back up your files with backup software or if you don't intend to use one, you can copy and paste files you need to an external drive.
If you prefer to copy and paste files on an external drive, you will need to install a new operating system or Windows on your new drive after removing the old drive.
2. Turn off the computer. Make sure you turn off your computer in other to avoid any kind of danger.
3. Remove the computer's battery. To be on the safe side, I will advise you to remove the computer's battery before replacing the hard drive. This is to ensure that no power is supplied to the computer.
4. Open the computer case. If you want to remove the device from your computer, you must remove your computer case. If you are using an old computer, you may find it easy to do since most of them are easily accessible in the hard drive area. But the newest computer will require you to lose the entire case to access the computer's drive.
Then unscrew the nuts and look for the device.
Please note that your computer drive may be a different size than mine, this is due to different disk sizes and dimensions. In most cases, a device size should be 6.4 cm for laptops and 8.9 cm for desktops.
Some drives like SSDs may look like RAM, but they are not. In my case I use a SATA HDD 6.4cm so I will need to get something similar, which should be SATA SSD 6.4cm.
5. Remove the computer drive. After locating the device, gently disconnect it from the computer. Make sure you do this carefully in others so as not to damage the device or computer.
6. Install the new SSD. After removing the old drive, insert the new SSD into your computer. Make sure it fits properly, otherwise it may damage the computer's drive.
7. Replace the computer case. Replace the computer case and screw it securely.
8. Start the computer. Insert the laptop battery and turn on the computer. Some computers will run a check on the new drive. If yours falls under this category, you will need to wait for the check to complete. Make sure you pay attention to the final message as it tells about the health and condition of the new device.
But if yours didn't run a check, no problem, you can always run a check whenever you want through the BIOS settings. Well, I will always advise you to do a check before using the device.
9. Reinstall the operating system. We will need to reinstall the operating system (if you are using a MAC, install an operating system supported by MAC computers, but if you are using a Windows computer, install any of the Windows operating systems you are familiar with). You can follow this procedure to install the Windows 10 operating system.
If you used the backup software, you need to install the backups. But if you copied and pasted your files to an external drive, you'll need to copy and paste them back to your computer.
Please note: After you remove your previous device, all the data saved on the previous device will still be intact and can also be accessed at any time. But if you intend to use it for something else, you can format the drive.
